We weren't all in Dublin Castle that day

We weren't all in Dublin Castle that day.

Some of us were in small warm rooms watching a projector, others in sitting rooms with only ourselves and the radio.

Some of us were on beaches or in cars down small lanes, or in kitchens with people we loved and disagreed with.

Some of us were smelling the Lee, or the Corrib, or the Suir as the news came in.

Some of us walked into city and town halls, basketball stadiums or GAA halls and swallowed the lump in our throats as the tallyman winked knowingly at us.

Some of us walked quiet country lanes, not hard concrete streets, asking the question, having the chats, looking into the eyes of once friendly neighbours. We smiled and debated in marts and markets, stood outside churches offering the hand of peace.

1,201, 607 yesses from North,South, East and West. All hard won, all hard fought. All deserving a thank you and a well done.

We weren't all in Dublin that glorious day, those long months, those painful years. Lots of us were elsewhere. We were in the places where we made history - with the people who made it possible.
